Introduction | Activities | Achievements | SWOT Analysis

Introduction TOP

KHOJ

(Initiated in April 1996), Chayangtajo, one of the 21 similar pilot projects of VHAI, is located in the district of East Kameng, Arunachal Pradesh. Some of the reasons behind selecting it for the project were
  1. Lowest Literacy rate in Arunachal Pradesh
  2. one of the remotest places having no health facilities and devoid of modern amenities like electricity, telephone, post office and bank.
  3. Poor living condition specially having no knowledge about healthy ways of living. No tradition of birth attendants.

Activities TOP

The activities at the project have recorded addition of new dimension every year. During the visit of Dr. P. C. Bhatnagar, National Co-Coordinator of Khoj projects last year in October 2001 a new idea of intervention through the local pujaries were mooted out. Since then it was being experimented at various places. This has resulted into a whole new set of activity for developing healthy psyche of the local population, anew instrument of attitudinal change. Following are the activities :
Achievements TOP

To summarize our achievements in 2001-02 in nut shell as follows:
  1. Initiating Immunization
  2. Spreading Culture of SHGs
  3. Increasing efficiency and area of operation of VHWs and TBAs
It is evident if we see the improvement by comparison of data.

SWOT Analysis TOP

Strengths :-

  1. SHG women have come out to be the main local support of KHOJ for spreading our message of health education and self dependence.

  2. Local people some of whom were adversaries in the past are now our office bearers of Township Committee.

  3. Consistency of VHWs, TBAs and supervisors this year and their efforts in the right direction is something which we could achieve in the year 2001-02 after five years of initiating the project. It seems that this team of local workers will be our greatest strength.

  4. Administration of the district has provide all possible help. All our projects and residences are govt. buildings. At our request the C. R. hall of Seppa was provided by Deputy Commissioner to our sister organization AJSS for developing its district office-cum-residence-cum training centre.

  5. VHAI and VHAAP have provided the projects all financial assistance and guidance for functioning. KHOJ partner’s meeting was an opportunity to share the experiences in other areas. Similarly 5 days training at Delhi in October 2001 provided the senior Supervisor the most needed exposure.

  6. Collaborating NGOs have also provided strength to our field workers for consistency and exposed them new avenues of social service.

Weaknesses :-

  1. One supervisor who had been wavering for last one year in performing work left the project. This delayed many new avenues to be explored such as opening a centre at Bameng till December 2001.

  2. Delayed transfer of financial from Delhi has caused problems again although the position is not so tragic as in previous years but still it causes large amounts of interest payments to the market lenders.

  3. Non availability of audit report of 2000-2001 year has delayed for applying for various schemes for SHGs as well as to tribal affairs ministry.

  4. Pathology lab could not be opened as the application of permission for opening in CHC building could not be processed at DMO office as he had gone on a very long leave.

  5. School health Programme could not be conducted last year due to the unprecedented short term which started in July and ended in November Winter vacations were for 2 months. Schools have started functioning in March 2002. Now again this year efforts will be made in this direction.

Opportunities :-

  1. SHCs have provided an opportunity through which we can bring about the culture of self dependence and productive work. Financially it will also lead us forward in the direction of self sustainability.

  2. Collaborating NGOs may spread our pattern of primary health cared in whole of the district of East Kameng.

  3. The local faith of Donyipoloism and customs of worships can be converted into an avenue of communicating massages of healthy life styles and behavior.

  4. VHAAP assuming the role of MNGO in RCH Programme has provided the FNCOs of East Kameng also to spread the Mother and Child care services in the district in which Khoj staff is actively helping.

Threats :-

The initial opposition and non cooperation of local people is now vanished and is replaced by help and enthusiasm for spreading our massage. Now the threats are only mechanical, that is our vehicle. The old vehicle has been time and again failing to carry the personnel’s of Khoj in time. Sometimes the whole series of programmes are cancelled when it breaks down for weeks together. Non availability of even mechanic not to say about the parts at Seppa caused unnecessary delay and expenditure in repairing sometimes it being taken to Tezpur. Although we have restricted its movements drastically still the repairing expenditure this year was also every high.
